The Modern Village House

Refurbishment of a 1990's village home

Refurbishment of a 1990's village home

This property was built in a Cambridgeshire village in the 1990's and is a 5 bedroom home. Although of a generous size the ground floor layout consisted of a huge living room, several small reception rooms, cupboards, a hallway and a small kitchen. It was also poorly lit with small windows.

The brief was to open the ground floor up with a large open plan area consisting of a kitchen, dining area, sitting area, a smaller separate lounge and a new glazed home office extension. The home office extension has glass walls, cedar cladding and a slate roof.

Structural work was extensive with most of the internal load bearing walls removed and a large opening formed in the rear of the house to provide an open plan area of some 60 square metres. Large aluminium sliding doors and windows were installed and an internal glazed timber screen to form an entrance hall. New heating and lighting was fitted throughout. A large oak front entrance frame was also installed.

The kitchen is a modern design with quartz worktops, oak flooring running throughout to coincide with the contemporary vision.

The staircase was re-built with modern newels and a glass balustrade. The job was completed by a bespoke oak and stainless steel work station in the office area.
