The Riverside Church

This Cambridgeshire church dates from the 13th/14th century with some parts dating back as far as 1092.

Situated in the picturesque village of Madingley, next to a river and in the grounds of Grade 1 listed Madingley Hall, St. Mary Magdalene’s church was desired by its Parochial Church Council to receive facilities to make it more accessible and usable but to ultimately retain its unique and historic character.

The brief was to provide WC facilities, a small servery for refreshments and increase accessibility a the rear of the church with more storage space. Along with this the existing church organ was to be refurbished and the external drive was relaid and resurfaced to provide suitable and safe access for all.

The tower ladder, trap door and ropes for the church bells were all modified and in some cases relocated to provide access for the WC to be installed whilst still retaining and improving upon their original functionality.

The WC was built into the base of the tower and partitioned off behind new hand carved oak panelling and screens with new water and drainage services.

A small servery was constructed at the back of the nave after re-sitting some pews and re-laying a level floor in hand made new Cambridge pamments.

The servery, kitchen cupboards and storage units were again hand made in English Oak with carvings to match the existing church joinery and was hung with forged ironmongery.
